BADAL ROY

Badal Roy is one of the world’s leading tabla (Indian hand drum) players. Although his musical roots reflect the influence of Indian classical music, Roy has taken the tabla from its traditional role and placed it in the realm of jazz and improvisational music. In addition to recording with John McLaughlin and the late Miles Davis, with whom he toured for three years, Roy has performed with such stellar jazz and world music players as Herbie Mann, Dave Leibman, Don Cherry, Pharoah Sanders, Dizzy Gillespie, Lonnie Liston Smith, Andreas Vollenweider and Yoko Ono. Since 1988, Roy has been a member of Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time, and has also collaborated with the Brazilian guitar duo Duofel, Michael Wolff, Garth Hudson, Chris Whitley, Bill Laswell and, since the mid-90s, Leni Stern.

STEVE GORN

Steve Gorn has performed Indian classical music and new American music on the bansuri bamboo flute and soprano saxophone in concerts and festivals throughout the world. He has composed numerous works for theatre, dance and television and has recorded and performed with a wide range of artists, including Paul Simon, Tony Levin, Jack DeJohnette, Glen Velez, Alessandra Belloni, Layne Redmond, Simon Shaheen and Mike Karn.

DANIEL MORENO

Percussionist Daniel Moreno started his musical career playing with artists such as George Benson, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Waldermar Bastoes, Pharoah Sanders, Les Paul, Roy Haynes, and his musical conduit, Don Cherry. His recent work on The RH Factor album by Roy Hargrove got rave reviews. In 2006 he won a Grammy for a recording of Duke Ellington’s “Caravan” with the band Les Paul and Friends.

KENNY WESSEL

Guitarist Kenny Wessel has toured and recorded as a member of Ornette Coleman’s Prime Time group since 1988. He has also worked with Gloria Lynne, Arthur and Red Prysock, Steve Turré, Pat Metheny, Dave Leibman, Lou Reed, Laurie Anderson, and Johnny Hartmann. Wessel, who leads and composes for his own jazz quartet and jazz trio, also co-leads a trio with Badal Roy and bassist Stomu Takeishi, an ensemble that combines jazz with North Indian music.
